Myofascial Pain Syndrome

Myofascial pain syndrome is a chronic musculoskeletal condition characterized by localized muscle pain and sensitive trigger points within tight bands of muscle tissue.

What Is Myofascial Pain Syndrome?

Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a condition involving persistent muscle pain caused by irritated trigger points in the fascia and surrounding muscle fibers. These trigger points can produce localized tenderness or referred pain in other areas of the body.

The condition may develop due to repetitive strain, muscle overuse, injury, poor posture, or prolonged stress on specific muscle groups.

Common Symptoms

  • Deep, aching muscle pain
  • Tender knots or trigger points in muscle tissue
  • Restricted range of motion
  • Muscle stiffness
  • Pain that worsens with activity or stress

Potential Causes

Myofascial pain syndrome can result from:

  • Repetitive motion injuries
  • Poor posture or prolonged sitting
  • Muscle trauma
  • Overtraining or sports-related strain
  • Chronic stress leading to muscle tension
