I'm about six weeks post major surgery for a condition called Neurogenic Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. It's basically nerve crush due to whip-lash, repetitive stress etc. I'm feeling very lucky that I have Dr. Maribel and Chesterton Physical Therapy helping me with my recovery. Mine is a long road back and their team has been helping me every step of the way. E-stim, laser, ultrasound, heat/ice, and dry-needling have all been used to help my muscles calm down and respond to treatment. The exercises they've implemented for me thus far are creative and perfectly matched to where I am in my recovery. The team is incredible - Alex, Adam, Neal, Jordan, Lucy, Sir John etc. - everyone is friendly, caring and genuinely wants to help you. Dr. Maribel oversees it all and designs customized treatment plans to get you where you need to go. She runs a tight ship and has hired a great staff. I have many sessions more to go and look forward to each one. Highly recommend!

All of the staff is very welcoming, they are like a big family and care for both the staff and patients. I see Dr. Maribel, she really tries to pinpoint what you need help with by asking many questions, which if you’re very anxious like me and don’t know how to talk to people helps tremendously.

Vertigo vs. Dizziness: What's the Difference and When to See a Physical Therapist

Have you ever felt lightheaded, unsteady, or as though the room was spinning? Many people use the words vertigo and dizziness interchangeably, but they can describe different sensations.

Understanding vertigo vs dizziness can help you communicate your symptoms more clearly to a healthcare professional. This is especially important when symptoms affect your walking, balance, driving, work, or everyday activities.

Dizziness and vertigo can have many possible causes. In some cases, physical therapy may be part of an appropriate treatment plan, particularly when balance or vestibular problems are involved. However, not every cause of dizziness or vertigo should be treated with physical therapy, so proper evaluation is important.

Vertigo vs. Dizziness: Understanding the Difference

Although the terms are often used together, dizziness is a broad description of several different sensations, while vertigo usually refers to a specific feeling of movement or spinning.

What Is Dizziness?

Dizziness is a general term that can describe several sensations, including:

  • Feeling lightheaded
  • Feeling faint or weak
  • Feeling unsteady
  • Feeling off-balance
  • Feeling as though you may lose your balance
  • Feeling disoriented

There are many possible causes of dizziness, which is why describing exactly what you feel can be helpful during a medical evaluation.

What Is Vertigo?

Vertigo is commonly described as feeling as though you or your surroundings are moving when there is no actual movement.

For example, you may feel as though:

  • The room is spinning
  • You are moving when you are standing still
  • Your surroundings are rotating
  • You are being pulled in a particular direction

Vertigo can sometimes be associated with problems involving the inner ear or vestibular system, but there are other possible causes as well.

Because different conditions can cause similar symptoms, experiencing vertigo does not automatically mean that you have a specific condition.

Common Causes of Dizziness and Vertigo

There are many possible reasons someone may experience dizziness or vertigo. Some examples include:

  • Inner ear or vestibular problems
  • Changes in symptoms with certain head positions
  • Medication side effects
  • Dehydration
  • Blood pressure changes
  • Migraine-related symptoms
  • Neurological or other medical conditions
  • Balance or sensory problems

This is not a complete list. Persistent, recurring, sudden, or concerning symptoms should be evaluated by an appropriate healthcare professional.

Understanding the possible source of your symptoms is important because the appropriate treatment depends on the underlying cause.

How Do Vertigo and Dizziness Affect Balance?

Dizziness and vertigo can make ordinary activities feel more difficult or less predictable.

You may notice problems when:

  • Walking
  • Standing up
  • Turning your head
  • Getting in or out of bed
  • Climbing stairs
  • Looking up or down
  • Walking through busy environments
  • Moving quickly from one position to another

Some people may also become less confident because they are worried about losing their balance or falling.

If balance problems continue, they may increase the risk of falls for some individuals. A healthcare professional can help determine what may be contributing to these difficulties and whether further evaluation or treatment is appropriate.

When to See a PT for Vertigo or Balance Problems

If you are wondering when to see a PT for vertigo, consider speaking with a healthcare provider or physical therapist when your symptoms continue, return repeatedly, or interfere with normal activities.

A physical therapist may evaluate movement, balance, walking, and certain vestibular-related symptoms to determine whether physical therapy may be appropriate.

You may benefit from discussing your symptoms with a healthcare professional when they:

  • Continue or repeatedly return
  • Affect your balance or walking
  • Make everyday activities difficult
  • Occur with specific movements or position changes
  • Make you concerned about falling
  • Continue after a medical evaluation when physical therapy has been recommended

A physical therapist may also work as part of a broader healthcare team. If your symptoms suggest that another type of medical evaluation is needed, the therapist may recommend that you speak with an appropriate healthcare professional.

How Vestibular Physical Therapy May Help

Vestibular rehabilitation is a type of physical therapy that focuses on movement, balance, and the body’s systems involved in maintaining orientation and stability.

When appropriate for a patient’s condition, a treatment program may include:

  • Balance exercises
  • Gaze stabilization exercises
  • Habituation exercises
  • Walking and movement training
  • Specific positioning or movement techniques when clinically appropriate
  • Education about managing movement and returning to activities safely

Treatment is personalized. Not every patient will receive the same exercises, and physical therapy may not be appropriate for every cause of dizziness or vertigo.

Your therapist will consider your symptoms, medical history, movement abilities, and other relevant information when developing a treatment approach.

What to Expect During a Vestibular Physical Therapy Evaluation

If physical therapy is considered appropriate, your first appointment may begin with a detailed discussion about your symptoms and medical history.

Your therapist may ask:

  • When did your symptoms begin?
  • How often do they occur?
  • What were you doing when symptoms started?
  • Do certain movements or positions make them worse?
  • Do you experience balance problems while walking?
  • Have you experienced falls or fear of falling?
  • Have you already been evaluated by another healthcare professional?

The physical therapist may also assess:

  • Balance and walking
  • Eye and head movements, when appropriate
  • Mobility
  • Functional limitations
  • Movement patterns that may affect your symptoms

The information gathered during the evaluation helps the therapist better understand your symptoms and determine whether an individualized physical therapy plan is appropriate

Looking for Vestibular Therapy Near Me?

If you have been searching for β€œvestibular therapy near me,” consider asking local physical therapy clinics whether they evaluate and treat vestibular or balance-related concerns.

Before scheduling an appointment, you may want to ask:

  • Does the clinic evaluate balance-related concerns?
  • Is a medical evaluation recommended first?
  • Do I need a referral?
  • What should I bring to my first appointment?
  • Can the therapist help determine whether physical therapy is appropriate for my symptoms?

For patients in Chesterton and surrounding communities, Chesterton Physical Therapy can be a local option to contact and discuss whether a physical therapy evaluation may be appropriate for your balance or vestibular concerns.

When Is Dizziness or Vertigo a Medical Emergency?

While some dizziness and vertigo may have less serious causes, sudden or severe symptoms can sometimes indicate a medical emergency.

Seek emergency medical care immediately if sudden dizziness or vertigo occurs with concerning symptoms such as:

  • Sudden weakness or numbness
  • Facial drooping
  • Difficulty speaking or understanding speech
  • A severe or sudden headache
  • Chest pain
  • Fainting or loss of consciousness
  • New vision changes
  • Sudden or severe difficulty walking
  • Other sudden neurological symptoms

Do not wait for a physical therapy appointment when emergency symptoms are present.

If you are unsure whether your symptoms require urgent medical attention, seek appropriate medical advice promptly.

Understanding Balance Disorder Treatment Options

Balance disorder treatment depends on what is causing the symptoms.

Depending on the situation, care may involve:

  • A primary care provider
  • A medical specialist
  • Physical therapy
  • Vestibular rehabilitation
  • Medication management
  • Other medical or rehabilitation approaches

Because dizziness and balance problems can have different causes, identifying the underlying issue is an important part of determining the appropriate treatment.

Physical therapy may be helpful for some patients, but it should not be assumed to be the right treatment for every person experiencing dizziness or vertigo.

Take the Next Step Toward Better Balance and Confidence

Understanding vertigo vs dizziness can be a useful first step when trying to describe what you are experiencing. Dizziness is a broad term that can describe several sensations, while vertigo generally involves a feeling of movement or spinning.

If symptoms persist, return repeatedly, or interfere with walking and daily activities, consider discussing them with an appropriate healthcare professional. In some cases, physical therapy may be included in a broader plan for managing balance or vestibular-related problems.

If you are in Chesterton or a surrounding community and want to learn whether physical therapy may be appropriate for your symptoms, contact Chesterton Physical Therapy to discuss your concerns and available evaluation options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dizziness is a broad term that can describe sensations such as lightheadedness, unsteadiness, or feeling faint. Vertigo usually refers to a sensation that you or your surroundings are moving or spinning when there is no actual movement.

Possible causes include inner ear or vestibular problems, medication effects, dehydration, blood pressure changes, migraine-related symptoms, balance problems, and certain neurological or other medical conditions. The cause cannot be determined from symptoms alone, so persistent or concerning dizziness should be properly evaluated.

You may consider discussing physical therapy with a healthcare professional when vertigo or balance symptoms continue, return repeatedly, affect walking or daily activities, or contribute to fear of falling. A physical therapist can help determine whether physical therapy may be appropriate as part of your care.

Physical therapy may help some people improve balance, movement, and functional abilities depending on the underlying cause of their symptoms. Treatment is individualized, and physical therapy is not appropriate for every cause of dizziness or vertigo.

Start by looking for local physical therapy clinics that evaluate balance or vestibular-related concerns. Ask whether an evaluation is appropriate for your symptoms and whether you need a referral or medical assessment first. Patients in Chesterton can contact Chesterton Physical Therapy to discuss whether a physical therapy evaluation may be suitable.
